The Berlin Philharmonic was founded in 1882, and is regarded as one of the best orchestras in the world. Many of the world’s best conductors have led the orchestra, including Mahler, Strauss, von Bulow, Brahms, and more recently von Karajan and Abbado. The ensemble has evolved into the digital age with the 2009 launch of its Digital Concert Hall, in which you may take a tour of the Philharmonie, watch livestreamed performances, and watch past performances. Sir Simon Rattle became conductor in 2002, and his tenure with the Berlin will soon end in 2018. This fall the orchestra will perform twice in Toronto, with exciting modern programmes at the Toronto Symphony’s performance venue, the Roy Thomson Hall. A review of the performance itself will follow in the weeks after the performance.
